Mix Movement Family’s:
“The Bush” @ Burning Man 2009
Clean-up Plan
For many of our campers, this will be our third time at Burning Man,
and our second theme camp (the first was in 2005, and didn’t entirely
live up to our idea). That along with many desert events of our own we have
thrown in the past has given us a wealth of clean up experience. Elements we
will be putting in place include:
-
Almost all of
our camp is put together with reusable materials we will be taking with us.
-
There will be a minimum of six waste containers clearly labeled (with
descriptions below them) for: Burnables, non-burnables, and recyclables.
-
There will be additional waste containers located within the main areas around the camp
reminding people to keep it clean, and making it convenient to do so.
-
There will
be *designated* food and drink areas that have additional ground coverage.
-
Our
entire camp is informed before the event on the necessity of "Leave No
Trace." We make sure all of our campers understand it, making them very conscious of
cleaning up after themselves and our guests. Clean-up is done
immediately, there is no procrastination when it comes to our
clean-up procedures. This way, trash is never forgotten.
-
At the end of every day, one person will be designated to making sure the
recyclable, burnable, and non-burnable waste is all properly separated.
-
After we
break down the camp, our entire crew does a "Hands Across the Desert"
style visual scan. This is where we walk in a line and pick up anything we see
on the playa as to cover our entire area before final inspection and completely
embracing the philosophy of “Leave No Trace.”
-
Braden Stockham & Norman Johnson
will do the
final inspection, but our entire camp is part of this clean-up procedure.
-
No glass to trash will be brought onto the Playa, and additional
containers that must be trashed later on will be easily collapsible.
-
We won't burn, dig holes, or do anything else that
might scar the Playa, and we will make sure our visitors know this as well by
posting our clean-up mission in our camp as well as keeping a vigilant watch.
Items we are bringing that help facilitate our Clean-Up Mission:
- Minimum of two
of large trash bins for each type of waste (six total for: burnable, non-burnable,
recyclable)
- Re-usable dinnerware for all
camp mates
- Floor Covering in all active
areas of the camp
- Signage for placing around our
camp reminding people to keep it clean
- Grey water containers
-
A Shovel
-
A Broom
-
A Rake
-
Work Gloves
-
Min. 3 Boxes of trash bags
-
Tin Cans for cigarette butts
-
Sledgehammer
In addition we have set aside a very large empty
trailer to haul away everything we collect (waste-wise).
Our
trash is our own and we will take it with us. We won't trash it on the Playa. We
will continue with the clean-up of Black Rock City even after our own camp is
spotless by seeking and helping out our neighbors with their clean-up procedures. We will make sure both our
camp mates, as well as anyone visiting our camp is aware of our "Leave
No Trace" plan. We will have visible signs explaining everything
including the breakdown of waste on our waste containers conveniently
located throughout our camp.
We as a camp:
-
Will not Scar the Playa in anyway
-
Will not bring anything onto the Playa that could possibly create MOOP (Matter-Out-Of-Place)
-
Will take everything with us when we leave
- Will not leave any trash in
the porta potties
- Will keep vigilant watch and
be ultimately responsible for the clean-up of our camp
- Will help our neighbors clean
their area as well as our own
- Will volunteer to help
clean-up the remainder of Black Rock City
- Will make sure the Playa is
left in the same condition as when we first arrived
- Will make "Leave No Trace" our
#1 priority
Our primary clean-up
supervision staff will consist of: Braden Stockham, Amanda Fox, Norman
Johnson, Lauren Nadolson, and Jed Poole. However, as stated previously, all of our campers
will be apart of this effort. For additional information on our clean-up
plan, please contact Braden Stockham at:
